California Academy of Sciences
The California Academy of Sciences, which opened on September 27, 2008, houses five distinctive realms: a planetarium, aquarium, living rain forest, natural history museum, and a research center. The Academy is located in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park.
The California Academy of Sciences earned the coveted platinum-level LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certificate. The living roof of the Academy is a combination of architecture and nature, that grows native plants, and features an engineered system to use recycled rain water, as well as bands of photovoltaic cells to generate electricity for the building. The solar panels will generate 213,000 kilowatt-hours of energy per year, which will provide about 10% of the Academy's electricity.
